The Lil Hospital

A few years back I found a twee pop band through the internet called “the Lil Hospital.”  I can’t remember how we first started chatting but we got to talking and became friendly.  Kevin, the brains of the Lil Hospital, offered to swap cds with me; I had already purchased his but he was nice enough to send me an earlier recording he had made called “I Wanna Be Well.”

Now I definely have a magical place in my heart for 60s-inspired indie pop that is recorded terribly and this CD hits that spot like a damn train.  Here’s some things he had to say about this recording:

“About the drum machine, it’s just a crappy yamaha keyboard’s drum presets filtered through some cheap reverb unit.”

OK UM AWESOME.

“It’s really lo-fi. meaning it was recorded on an answering machine.”

This can’t be possible but I REALLY want to believe this is true.  Every cell in my body wants this to be true.  AWESOME AWESOME

“I was cleaning out my parent’s car and i found a copy of “I Wanna Be Well”, which is the Lil’ Hospital’s first album, which is now out of print. in fact, this is the very last last copy.

I GOT HIS MOM’S COPY.  IT LITERALLY DOES NOT GET ANY AWESOMER.

Anyways, I’m posting my favorite song here, “Summer Reading List.”  I love that bratty bassline, the clipping drum machine, and all the major 6ths and 7ths floating around.  It’s just good.
